I really loved the chalkboards in Ballard Designs…but I will not pay that price! Soooo….I went to Home Depot and bought a can of chalkboard paint, a can of magnetic paint, and molding for the frame. The molding was already primed. I was trying to get someone to help me, but much to my chagrin, I had to saw the pieces myself. I cut a couple of wrong angles, but finally got it. I wanted my board to be 30″ x 60″. I just measured the inside of the molding and it worked. I had it all laid out on the floor of the home depot…making sure it lined up. I taped off my wall with my measurements and rolled the magnetic paint first (the whole can) and then the chalkboard paint. My hubby used his nail gun to put the frame up.
My kids have to look at it from where they sit & eat. So I use it to brainwash them by writing things like this…
It’s starting to take…the brainwashing that is.
What I would’ve done differently:
-Not painted directly on the wall! I would’ve painted on a 1/4″ board & nailed the molding to that…AND then I would’ve hung it on the wall…so I could move it if I wanted. The magnetic paint works fine…but not the greatest. I might’ve left that step out also. Otherwise, I love it! So do the girls…they pull out their sidewalk chalk & draw all kinds of pictures!
Go visit Nester for other chalkboard ideas!
I love the chalk board! I’m trying to find the right place in my house for one as well. I don’t have any kids, though, so it will be just for me. It will probably a kitchen menu board. Truthfully, I would rather draw on a chalkboard than cook. 🙂
I’ve wanted to do something like this for so long – it looks stunning. Well done.
Such a great idea. My boys would love to have that in our house.>>Robin/Southern Bella
Once again I love, love love it!!!!!! Your such a go getter!!! Great Job!
Hi! Just came aross your blog..love it! We have several chalk boards in our houe, too! One dirsectly on the wall in the playroom and another in the kitchen done in an old frame!>They are the best! And I agree not paying big $$$ when you can do it yourself!>Well done!
Wonderful job! It looks just like the ones they sell for those big bucks!>>Joanne
Just found your blog. Great posts! I just did a project with molding at my house this week. I added a frame around my bathroom mirror. This is a great idea too, and would give me another chance at practicing my mitering saw skills. I’m almost ready to re-do my dining chair seats and I’m totally going to make half of them with that vinyl stuff on my fabric. I had no idea that children would be such messy little eaters when I bought that furniture!
Decorative, yet educational – love it!! Now I’m trying to come up with a place to “hang” one in my house. Thanks for the great idea!
Great job on the chalkboard!! I bet you love it even more because you did it yourself!! Also, thanks for the tips about what you would’ve done differently so that we can all learn from you.>>I like the molding, too!>>Michele>luvkittysmeowmail@gmail.com
Thanks for the child brainwashing tip!:)
I just found your blog – what a fan-tab-U-lous idea!! I have a blank space in my kitchen as well. I hope you don’t mind me lifting the idea!
Lurker here…>I love this idea! Thanks so much for the tips. I’m wondering if there is much chalk dust that gets all over things from writing on the board?>>Thanks in advance!>Jennifer
jennifer l.,>…there is a little dust, not as much as I would have thought. Depends on how often you use it…I clean it by erasing the entire board and then wiping it with a wet rag.
brilliant idea.>>Racheal x
This is SO much better than the pricey ones I’ve been drooling over – I am totally gonna do this in my kitchen this weekend. It looks great!
