When 7 year old’s paint their nails by themselves. Why I don’t buy an $800 table from Pottery Barn. The title was a little long. No, this is not about a stripper or a stripper pole. My daughter decided to paint her nails by herself, but she had to take the old polish off…by herself. So…of course and with the drop of a hat…acetone fingernail polish remover was spilled on my kitchen table. It took up 3 layers of paint and some varnish. Seriously? And we put this on our nails and skin? IT TAKES UP 3 LAYERS OF PAINT OFF A TABLE!

So, now I know if I’m ever in a bind for a stripper…I can just use acetone polish remover. I told her it was ok because I was going to paint the table white anyway. She just helped me get it started. Thank goodness this was a $20 thrift store find and it’ll be good as new with a little paint! What have your kids done for you lately?
Now I see exactly why I've been told to buy non Acetone nail polish remover!! Wow! Janell
Oh no! Bummer–at least you have a good outlook on it. You are right that with a little paint it will be good as new!
Awww! Poor baby! You and her…lol It will make you get that table done…:) Life is magical that way…lol

BTW, I am having a Chalk Paint Giveaway…
Probably a good idea to come sign up…lol I think you may need some! 😉
Oh my, that is something that my girlies would “do for me”! At least some of the work is already done for you!

oh no! so sorry. Yeah. I'm looking at the story of my life. 😉 I'm kind of waiting for a few of my real prized possessions {like my grandmother's candy jar} to get smashed. here's to hoping not. The other day, my 22 mo. old took a pencil and went to town on our armoire. I guess he thought it needed a makeover. at least it was only pencil. still have to take a magic eraser to it. 😉
I did the exact same thing to my mama's brand new dining room table when I was about 14 years old. She didn't put the same positive spin on it as you. Let's just say that it was a traumatic childhood experience for me.
Well we have gotten past that stage or so I thought until this past weekend. Lets see… we were driving home from picking the middle boy up from a 50 miles bike ride when he casually mentioned that he and his older brother were rear-ended the evening before… What? REAR ENDED!! How come we didn't hear about it??? “OH it was just a little tap, no big deal!”
Well we got home and boy #1 was gone for the day/evening! So Sunday morning we casually ask him about it. He repeats the same thing… no big deal, just a little tap, didn't feel anything. So then we proceed to show him the bumper of the pick-up. BENT DOWN! Oh yeah that is when he mentions this is the SECOND time he has been rear ended. The first was at school when a girl back out and into him…. it moved the pick-up a few inches but he didn't see any damage so he didn't get any insurance info!! OH yeah he didn't get any info on Friday either, just shrugged his shoulders and drove off when the light turned green…. And its NOT HIS TRUCK, he just uses it!
You would think he would have remembered ALL the times we've reminded him if someone runs into you get insurance info… But NO! Ok, I vented…. THANK YOU! This afternoon we go to get the estimate on repairs… yeah… I see lots of “chores” for him this summer. Hey maybe I can get the deck about the above ground pool stained this weekend… or maybe that should be I can watch as it gets stained. Yep you got it! Boyo is gonna be doing some extra work!
I think your table is going to look lovely white!
scary! i'm going to think twice before i paint my nails again.
can't wait to see the makeover 🙂
i discovered this nail-polish-stripper when i was in high school and spilled remover all over my mom's new coffee table. only, she wasn't planning on refinishing it. let's just say my story doesn't have quite as happy of an ending.
$20? Really. Wow that was really cheap. Sorry about the stripper, though. I have a dark green table kind of like that that I want to paint as well.
OMG!!!! Awful! Lets see, my daughter recently wiped her jam hands all over the new WHITE shower curtain I finally broke down and bought after eyeballing it for over a year, and oh ya… she broke my nose 2 months after I had a nose job. Its not looking the same anymore!
Oh my!

Oh no! My twin sister did the same thing when we were her age. She was using nail polish remover to take off stickers from her Trapper Keeper and she spilled it all over the top of my parents brand new oak table they had saved and saved for. My mom went outside and cried! (I don't blame her one bit.)
Kids decided that they wanted to be creative on the hallway wall. Permanent black marker on floral wallpaper, somehow it doesn't blend to well
My kids have yet to do it because I did this to the bathroom cabinets when i was a kid. I remind them of that all the time. We have yet to have an accident but I believe it is inevitable with all the girls in my house.
Oh my gosh, I want to be just like you when I grown up! I would have freaked all out! Yay for you!
Even though your table was damaged, I think your daughter will remember this incident and recall just how much her mother LOVED her over a damaged object. And that's way more important. You are the sweetest Mom.

I did that to my mother's bedroom set when I was home sick as a child. My mother had a mahogany bedroom set she saved for years to buy and I just knocked my nail polish remover over on the headboard shelf. She never said a word to me. I was sure I would be killed as soon as she saw it but it just gave her permission to buy a new set? I felt pretty lucky that day.
Thankfully you were planning on repainting it! Yikes. Might be time to buy the polish remover in the little tub with the sponge that you just dip your finger into. 🙂
Sometimes we need a little push to start that makeover!
Can't wait to see the table painted white!!!
Is your daughter still able to sit down!!! LOL. My 19 year old son is studying design at uni and is forever making things and forever ruining things of mine. A couple of days ago he was spray painting (on my back deck without much cover) when he put the can of black enamel down a bit hard on to the tiles and the can kind of burst!!!! Black spray over everything and I mean everything, furniture, beautiful french table cloth, tiles, and best of all…himself. All I heard was a scream and then a wimper as he realised what he had done.
I was quite controlled and just handed him a bottle of turps and an old towel and told him not to come in till it was clean!!!
Deep breath!!! (got home yesterday to find my new laundry covered in plaster of paris!) scream inwardly!!!
Drawing all over off-white slipcover with black ink! Any ideas on how to get that out? It's closer to ivory so I don't think can't bleach it…
well thats a good tip to know,,but sorry about the table.
Oh no, bummer about the table. But at least you have that little extra shove (even though it may not have been necessary) to get started on repainting your table.
What a marvelous attitude you have – I'm trying to change my outlook on things to “well, what can you do but fix up and move on.” It does help that it's not a super-expensive piece of furniture. You are obvioulsy a fabulous mom!
Patty
Oh My, this hurts me just looking at it. But, it'll look great in white!
That's why I gave up wearing nail polish….I'll just wear pretty things instead.
Can't wait to see the redo.

Oh yes, that happened to my Pottery Barn table. Fortunately I didn't mind because it was already a total piece of junk (reason #2 to not buy an expensive PB table). My cheap wood table from the discount furniture store is much better quality.
The other item that will strip your table's paint is bug spray (the kind for people). I put a bottle on my table and it took the paint right off. Not putting that on my kids anymore!

potpourri oil does this too.. learned that the hard way.
Oh my gosh… sorry about the table:(
