I would paint my countertops in a heartbeat if they were laminate, but they’re not. They’re Corian and they’re UGLY and I’m petrified the paint will peel off in sheets. I kept reading of people getting their counters painted for a few hundred dollars, so I thought I’d give it a whirl and get a professional to do it.
So I got a couple of estimates. I called one company called Amazing Refinishers. He was professional did his measurements, went to his car and came back with a written quote for $777.00 I thought that was a lot for some paint, but maybe I’m just a cheap diy’er…which is the probability.
Then I called Miracle Method…who I had a bit of a time with. One guy came out and said it’d be around $1000 however he never sent me a written quote. Then another guy called a couple of weeks later and said he would come back out for another quote. He eyeballed my kitchen and said that it would be $1460. He didn’t pull out the first measuring tape so I’m not sure what went into his quote but for $1460, I might as well invest in granite…but I’m not. I’m still researching…maybe I’ll find some slabs of granite laying on the side of the road.
*Disclaimer: I’m sorry if you have my same countertops. If it’s worth anything, my mom and sister love my countertops. I wish they’d come steal them.
When we bought our present house 4 years ago we had dark red countertops….yuck! We wanted granite and went to Lowes and they gave us an estimate of I can't remember just how much but it was too much. We have a lot of counter surface! One night we were visiting our son in Columbus and went by this new place that had just opened in this industrial park and they specialized in stone counters. They came out the next day and measured, gave us the estimate and the next week came out and installed. We did it while we had the money and are thrilled with them. There is a post in my archives on them. Good luck on getting what you want. At least you have neutral shade to work with and not RED.~Hugs, Patti
hey! have you thought about some cheapo countertops from ikea? MUCH better in the price department. It's butcher's block, so all you do it cut and treat. Not sure if that sounds good to you, but just sayin…it's an option! 😉
I hear ya. The people who owned this house before us covered the kitchen counters with floor tiles and grout…which you can imagine is a big ole PITA any time something spills. We've received quotes that are too high for us, too. I'm waiting for a miracle. 😉
Maybe there's a way to work around them? A different paint color? Accent colors? Etc… Just thinking out loud here. Gotta be some way to make lemonade from the lemons…
I paid a company in cash for our granite, and got quite a lot of off the total price.
Have you considered stained butcher block? Good 'ol IKEA has great butcher block that I guess you install yourself, but a nice dark stain and seal would look great.
Hmm…I hear ya in the price department. I guess if it was me I'd try and find something that works with them. Maybe I”m crazy but this is what I'd do:
Paint the cabinets a dark color, black maybe – there is black in the countertops, right? Then I'd remove the backsplash strip and do a tile backsplash. I think a white or light blue antique looking subway tile would be my first choice.
With all that I think not only would your countertops blend right it, they's look custom for the space!
Call around to granite places local to you (not HD or Lowes), call the actual suppliers and ask if they have any remnant pieces leftover from bigger jobs. Often times they'll give you the granite for the price of installing it! We did this when we got our condo ready to sell. I believe we had about 30sqft of counter top space and got the granite installed for $800. We also paid in cash so they gave us an additional discount for that.
Have you heard of this product?

I use Modern Masters paints and they came out with this just for corian and smooth surface countertops. I haven't seen it in person, but have heard great things. They sell it at Lowes or you can buy it online. Good luck!
Just a word of encouragement…too often by looking and comparing what we have with others we seem for some crazy reason to keep wanting more and more. Simply enjoy the blessings we have been given leads to joy and peace without constantly striving for more. Be thankful for the countertops, at least you have them…many don't.
It might be cheaper to get a new black stove, have your fridge painted and put on dark handles. But, you've probably already thought of that.
I was wondering if that guy ever called you back, cant wait to see/hear what you decide to do.
If you'll click over to this post http://heartstringsnpreciousthings.blogspot.com/2009/08/these-were-sweet-back-in-daylike-when-i.html You'll see what I did with my countertops. While the supplies were free for me, they aren't expensive when you are talking countertops and it was so easy!! Plus, you can achieve any look you want. Send me an e-mail if you have any questions.
My SIL and I were just talking about how tastes change. I remember when Corian was the thing I wanted and couldn't afford; I had to settle for formica with a tile backsplash. I'm thinking something similar might be your answer. Your countertop reminds me of black granite. Why not take off the Corian backsplash and tile up to the bottom of your upper cabinets? I think it would give a whole new look to your kitchen. (JMHO)
I have a total 70's kitchen… and I wasn't even alive in the 70's… your post made me giggle… we are contemplating what and how to do something with ours too… we are blessed with burnt orange counters (swear) and dark dark brown cabinets… all aligned next to an awesome (not) faux wood wall. WE are saving pennies for new counters… I think I can sand and stain the cabinets…
I wish you lots and lots of luck!!!
We did the Ikea wood block countertops that a couple people mentioned. I LOVE them. We painted the cabinets white, tiled the back splash in subway tile, got new drawer pulls and hinges and a new faucet…and for about $500 my kitchen looks FABULOUS! The counters are very easy to care for too. Just something to think about…
Seriously, Granite is overrated! Why would anyone want to deal with bacteria, mold and resurfacing? Check out silestone or manufactured quartz! It has the look of granite without the sanitary (lack of) issues of granite. Plus granite will soon be a way of “dating” your home. Good luck with the countertop issue!
Countertops would look amazing if it matches your kitchen interior as well.
gosh – i have the world's ugliest BLUE FORMICA countertops – i had some seriously high estimates for replacement too – so i'd love to paint what doyou know about this?
thanks

Consider a DIY project with Giani Granite Paint. The website is gianipaint.com. It's about $50 for the kit.
I just refinished my laminate countertops myself with spray paint. Primed with grey & finished with a couple coats of faux stone spray paint & then about 5 layers of polyurethene. At first I was scared but now that it's done. I think it looks great & I love it. Under $50
I have some friends that were able to get enough extra pieces from a job at a granite yard to do their whole kitchen. They went in and spoke to the granite guy, gave the dimensions they needed and the price they could afford and patiently waited and sure enough they got a call! Also, some other friends did granite tiles to save on the cost of a slab. I think they got the tiles at Lowes or home depot, and they did not use spacers between so the grout lines were minimal, and barely noticable.
Good luck to you!
It may be cheaper to get a new black stove, refrigerator painted and placed on the dark handles. But, you've probably already thought of that.
Paint dark cabinets, black may be – a black table, right? Then, I removed the backsplash area and roofs of the backsplash. I think the white or light blue subway tiles antique look will be my first choice.
A breast lift, also known as a mastopexy, removes excess fat and tissue to lift and tighten the breast for better shape and firmness. Factors such as weight loss, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and ultimately even age frequently cause a loss of skin elasticity in women,
Good to see the wide range of Granite kitchen Countertop here.

I want to second the Countertop Transformations from Lowe's. It's cheap, easy, and after a year and a half looks exactly like it did when first done. I didn't trust paint on countertops considering I've been known to forego cutting boards but I swear nothing can hurt it. Plus I was willing to try just about anything to get rid of our baby blue, cigarette burned laminate. When we bought our kit it was $250 and I could've done our kitchen three times over.
I am in the process of redoing our bathroom cabinets(that are white) to a acorn. They are turning out beautifully. Then onto to redoing the countertop. I am going to use the Rustoleum Countertop Transformation kit. It is about $80 and it has everything in it you need even a sanding kit so you will not have to worry about the paint peeling off. I love Rustoleum products that is what I am using on bathroom cabinets. When I am done then I will do kitchen:)
